DOES THE BATES METHOD WORK?
I wouldn't do it if it didn't! - not everybody will get back to normal 20/20 vision. Most are satisfied with beyond expectation independence of visual aids. Guarantees are not possible as individuals' efforts and eyesight conditions are unique and commitment varies so. You only need 20 /40 vision to legally drive.
CAN THIS ALTERNATIVE ACTUALLY BENEFIT ME? You have come this far and rationalised that poor eyesight just could be reversed! It's not necessarily a quick fix, but many procrastinators were awestruck of what they had been missing over the years. How many years have you been wearing prescription optical aids? You don't have to wear them for the rest of you life! Think about it.
WHAT ABOUT ASTIGMATISM? Astigmatism usually compounds short-sighted problems and the directional muscles for the eye working in harmony without stress will return the eyeball and cornea to full sphericalness. NO STIGMA ATTACHED!
EXERCISES DON'T WORK?
At the physical level exercises are just a means to an end of regaining mobile vision habits. But getting excited about what you see again is just as important. Regaining contact with our awesome creation is about having time out with our dear selves. Exercises are to challenge your vision focussing systems that have been dormant since the you starting wearing glasses all day.
HOW QUICKLY WILL THE METHOD WORK?
Just the experience of 3 x 15 minute routines a day with out glasses or contacts for 3-5 weeks is sufficient to take on board the natural viewing habits. A vision educator motivates individuals to gain 30 hours of practice and expereince of natural vision in the shortest possible time.
I HAVE JUST LOST OR BROKEN MY GLASSES. SHOULD I GET A NEW WEAKER PAIR? You may need them for legal driving only. If you can manage with contacts, an optometrist may be able to show you what having 1 dioptre weaker is like.
I CAN'T MANAGE WITHOUT MY GLASSES? DO YOU RECOMMEND NOT WEARING MY GLASSES AT ALL FOR THE EXERCISES?
Its not all or nothing! As many exercises can be done with your contacts/glasses on, but routines without them are essential for the first 5 weeks.
IS AGING A FACTOR? AM I TOO OLD TO BENEFIT?
No. We just need to understand that our bodies and lifestyles evolve and slow as we get older, most of us loose close-work vision because we no longer do any close work! Equally we neither challenge our low light nor bright light perception skills. We choose to use electric lights in all low daylight conditions, and in bright light, are dependant on our sun glasses.
CAN YOU RECOMMEND ANY BOOKS? Yes - but! "Book learning" is one thing, a coach another; for instance you may need to persist with one exercise rather than another. Every persons eyes /seeing-perception-memory system is unique; what may work for another may not for you. Books will remain considerably cheaper than a fashionable set of glasses and frames. The following authors are worth checking out: Dr Roberto Kaplan, Dr Jacob Lieberman, Dr Tom Quakenbush. Janet Goodrich for Children.
WILL I NEED TO CHANGE MY PRESCRIPTION?
You will find that strong lens prescriptions get increasing tiring and stressful to wear. 25% of my students lens prescriptions are too strong to start with. Depends on your starting prescription:
- less than 2 diopters of error, unlikely. Most students can cope with ± 1 dioptre of error and will have the skills to revive tired /stressed eyes as and when these arrive.
- Over ± 4 dioptre - yes, but an understanding optometrist may be able to prescribe reducing contact lenses.
IS LIFESTYLE A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR TO POOR VISION HABITS?
Of course - the Bates Method argument is that visual dysfunction is a direct result of stress. Stress for some goes to eyes, others backs or thirdly guts. Compare your daily vision challenges or abusage with say a truck driver /data processor /computer operator / ballet-dancer, bushman, teacher, Doctor etc. What posture do you take up while working? There are many factors which can be discussed and reviewed.
CAN A DIET CONTRIBUTE TO MY VISION WELL BEING?
Yes a detox could be useful and food combinations often need review, there are many food supplements that assist. Negatively there are many "Over the counter drugs" directly effecting vision. Even a spoonful of sugar!
